A Student with Parkinson's Disease

"I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in September 2014 at age 59.

I tried the recommended Tai Chi and PD Warriors classes, but unfortunately both were too physically hard for me.

Looking for some other form of exercise I started Pilates, which I still enjoy, but I was/am always was looking for something more.

When I joined Wendy’s Feldenkrais classes in 2015, I hoped to find some relief from my body’s stiffness and pains. After the first session, I didn’t think I was getting much from it. How on earth these small movements, mostly on one side of the body could help me? Would I be able actually stand up and walked home at all?

But to my absolute astonishment I was amazed with my movements as I walked across the room after the exercise.  My body was definitely moving differently and without pain and stiffness.  And from then I was hooked.
My advice to anyone considering Feldenkrais is . . . try it! Don’t be put off by fear or scepticism, wondering “will this really work for me?”

It will.

Wendy is a great teacher, individually correcting our postures during the sessions, which I personally find very helpful. You will meet lovely people, but most of all, you will find relief from pain and stiffness and thus improve the posture”.

Confidence in my body is back. . . .

I had spent a considerable amount of time and money looking for something/anything that would help my chronic right hip and leg discomfort to pain.

During that period of 3 years I had tried everything and no one could give me an answer or a cure.  I had lost all confidence in my body and felt that I couldn't trust my right leg on any uneven surface, up slopes or steps.

I had heard of Feldenkrais but didn't really know anything about it but when I saw that a class was being offered at the Women's Health Centre in North Hobart I felt I had nothing to lose.

After a very short time I really felt that something was changing and that my body was softening and not holding everything so tense.  Then came a breakthrough when I spontaneously ran across a road.  Not fast mind you but there had been no thought process that I had to be careful. Just a bit exciting.

I attend 1 class a week and do one taped session at home each week, and another if my body tells me it would be a good idea.

Who would have thought that subtle, micro movements could make such a difference?

A grateful participant, Nan Johnston

Regaining autonomy with my shoulder pain management

. .  the last lot (of movements you taught me in our one on one sessions) have been really useful, kind of like a cat stretching. Been doing them a couple of times a day. They help when I get home from work and am feeling a little stiff. First thing i do after entering the door and kick off my shoes.
You have my heartfelt thanks.

Space to Breathe Workshop

. . . your Space to Breathe workshop, could not have been better. Each session was wonderful by itself, you both gave your very best for the whole day, and the sessions made one coherent and seamless whole.

I feel so refreshed and invigorated both physically and mentally, I really appreciate the difference. Usually I spend much of my Sunday doing uni work, sitting down reading and getting anxious and often overwhelmed about the mountains of work ahead of me in the coming week.

. . . I slept so well last night and jumped into the pool at the Aquatic Centre at 6am this morning full of life! And in the past couple of hours I’ve managed to just about clear my desk and feel on top of my work at uni, must be the first Monday ever (in my nearly 20 years in this job) that I feel as cheerful and confident about the challenges ahead.

It was lovely to have the stillness and quiet for the whole day. . . . how blessed we are in our area with so many wonderful and committed teachers who share their wisdom with us.

I hope that you might think of offering another day of quiet again sometime.

My heartfelt thanks once more, love, Leila

A Sense of My Whole Self

As someone who has experienced dissociation over many years, as a symptom of PTSD, this work is truly empowering. It is so gentle and subtle but very profound for my knowing of Self.

My experience of Feldenkrais with Wendy is pure wonderment . . . each experience is a true gift of insight into my mind/body system. I 'discover' parts of my body that have been outside of my awareness.

Shoulder Problems? Not any longer!

Thank you so much for last Friday’s class, my neck and especially my left shoulder – which is often painful and sore – feel just so much better, I can hardly believe that just two sessions would make such a difference. . . . .
Thank you again for really adding to the quality of my life.
