Women's Health Tasmania (Hobart Women's Health Centre) Classes 2017

Term 3, 2107

Mindful Movement and Neuroplasticity: Improving Movement, Reducing Pain and Calming your Mind

An Awareness Through Movement class that trains your nervous system (your brain) through attention to subtle movements of your body. We will be referencing the work of Norman Doidge to help understand how we learn and change through movement.

In each class, you will experience a series of gentle, sequential movements patterns, which serve to re-calibrate your nervous system, creating the opportunity to let go of old patterns of movement (and stiffness, pain and discomfort) and imprint new, simpler, more comfortable ways of moving. And your body and mind will become calmer. . .

Term Two, 2017

A Three week intensive from May 4th to May 18th.

Feldenkrais Awareness through Movement for your Pelvis, Hips and Pelvic Floor

These gentle lessons further develop the themes introduced in Joanna's recent "A Better Functioning Pelvic Floor" workshops.

Many of us don't realise that the muscles of the pelvic floor contribute to our breathing, balance, and posture. Our pelvis is central to all movement, and is connected to all the largest, most powerful muscles in the body. Free, fluent movement of the pelvis and hips allows the structures above and below to happily move in all planes.
This 3 week course begins Thursday May 4th
Cost: $40 or $15 for drop ins.

25 Lefroy St North Hobart
1.30 - 2.30pm Thursdays.

Term One 2017
More Feldenkrais for Everyday Life: moving naturally

Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement classes resume on February 9th for a 10 week term, until Easter.

It is such a delight to move more easily and comfortably. As one participant said "Many thanks for your lessons this year. My body feels so much more flexible and 'whole'. I plan to come to class whenever I can".

Whatever our age or level of fitness, we can all learn to move more easily, with minimum effort and maximum efficiency. . .  not through muscle strength, but by increasing the awareness of how our system connects to create our movements.

Our gentle Feldenkrais lessons re-mind and re-make the neurological connections that form the basis of our everyday movements. With these lessons, fundamental movements like reaching (to close your curtains), bending (to tie your laces), rolling over, and getting up from your chair will be simpler and less effort.

Class is on Thursdays at 1.30 at 25 Lefroy St, North Hobart.
Cost: $135 for 10 sessions
Bookings are essential as space is limited
Drop-ins welcome provided there is space, and if you've missed a few sessions that's OK too: just give me a call!The Drop-in rate is $15 per session.

2016 series 4

exploring Feldenkrais ~ exploring Self

In this series we will be going back to some basics: bringing our attention again and again to our thoughts and patterns of feeling, as well as our patterns of movement.

The ways we think, feel, move and act are part of who we have grown into being, from influences of family, genetics, love, confusion, activity and rest. Becoming aware of how we move, what we do, think and feel, gives us an opportunity to change.

"I love how the ways we work with ourselves in class begin to reverberate throughout our lives. For many it means moving more slowly, doing less and sensing more! For most, this is something new.
For others, it means moving more— moving with more variety, moving with more grace and moving with more spontaneity. It means tapping back into one’s inner compulsion to move when there’s been too much stillness and rest when there’s been too much movement. It means getting back to knowing one’s self and trusting the cues we receive from our internal landscapes.
How we move can bring us pain or pleasure. How we move can help us to satiate our more primitive needs like eating and procreating. But how we move can also bring us more into the moment and deeper into our experiences of our selves and our world." Buffy Owens.
Dancer and movement teacher, Carrie Gerow says " I would say the most fun I am having with it (the Feldenkrais Method) is reconnecting to the wisdom my body already possesses. That it has always possessed. . .  and that I learned not to trust over years and years and years."
Class is on Thursdays at 1.30pm at 25 Lefroy St, North Hobart.
Cost: $100 for 7 sessions
Bookings are essential as space is limited.
Drop-ins welcome, and if you've missed a few sessions that's OK too: just give me a call! The Drop-in rate is $15 per session.

2016 Series 1:

I am so pleased to be invited to continue teaching in this supportive gentle setting, and to offer a new series of Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement classes. This is the beginning of my fifth year of classes at HWHC. Thank you!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There's not so much a theme to this term's series of classes, as an aspiration:
Unfurl Your Self: restore your ease of movement
It is possible to unravel the patterns of tension that contribute to stiff hips, sore knees, low back strain and the general aches and pains that come with injury, strain, stress and age..
You will learn gentle, delicious techniques to reduce tension and stress in your body and your mind. As you learn to move fluently and easily, you will feel more stability through your entire system. These gentle yet powerful movement patterns will help you find confidence, comfort flexibility and freedom in all your daily activities.
Through this series of 8 gentle Awareness through Movement lessons, you can experience improvements without stretching or strengthening, but by learning with the neuroplastic power of your brain. (Read what Norman Doidge has to say about the Feldenkrais Method in his book The Brain's Way of Healing)
Thursdays at 1.30 - 2.30pm
from February 4th, 2016
$95 for 8 lessons.
Past Classes at HWHC in 2015:
Mindful Movement for the Pelvis, Hips and Pelvic Floorand this is how it goes. . . !
It is possible to unravel the patterns of tension that contribute to stiff hips, sore knees, low back strain and issues with incontinence.
The pelvis is central to all movement, capable of an almost infinite number of directions and qualities of movement, and is connected to all the largest, most powerful muscles in the body. Free, fluent movement of the pelvis and hips allows the structures above and below to happily move in all planes, while balance in the muscles of the pelvic floor can address continence issues.
Through this series of 12 gentle Awareness through Movement lessons, you can experience improvements without stretching or strengthening, but by learning with the neuroplastic power of your brain.
Thursdays at 1.30 - 2.30pm,
from September 17th 2015. Beginners welcome.
$135 for 12 lessons.
Introduce a friend, and both pay $120 for the series.
